Winter tyres – what you need to be aware of : Hometyre Sussex

Are you considering fitting Winter tyres this year?

If you are then please be aware that you must change all four tyres on your vehicle, not just the driving wheels.

Winter tyres are not just for use in the snow, they are designed for use in low temperatures of below 7 degrees Centigrade. Winter tyres are made of a softer compound rubber than summer tyres, this allows them to be mere flexible in cold wet conditions (typical UK winter). This flexibility means that they give improved road handling and shorter stopping distances that a normal summer tyre in cold conditions.

If it does snow, the winter tyres have lots of small slits in the tread, these are designed to grip the snow and stop you slipping. With a normal summer tyre in the snow soon fills the grooves in the tread giving a similar surface as a bald tyre. Due to it being inflexible the snow stays in the grooves causing you to slip. With a winter tyre, the rubber flexes allowing the snow to drop out and leave the tread free to grip the road surface. Winter tyres are a little more expensive than summer tyres, but there are budget makes available. And you typically only need to use them from November through to March.

Hometyre are a mobile service and we can come to you to fit your tyres, we have vans across the country, so give us a call to see if we are in your area.
