Take Control of Your Wardrobe! by My Personal Style
The average woman spends 287 days of her life being indecisive when going through her wardrobe and wears just 20% of her wardrobe 80% of the time.
In our “time poor“ lives and these difficult economic times, it makes sense to take control of our wardrobe and ensure that every item earns its keep.
Before you buy any more clothes, it pays to take stock of what you already have and clear out any clothes which you no longer wear. Not only will this provide space for any new purchases but it will also enable you to see exactly what you already have (but may well have forgotten about) and what “gaps” you need to fill.
The best way to check out what you have in your wardrobe, what works and what doesn’t is to go though each item of clothing piece by piece. Give yourself plenty of time to do this and try items on if you’re unsure about them or haven’t worn them for a while.
You will need three piles
- Pile 1 Clothes you will keep
- Pile 2 Clothes you might keep
- Pile 3 Clothes that must go
For each garment you need to ask yourself:
Is it the right colour for your particular colouring? If the answer is yes, is it the right style? If it is it goes in pile 1.
If it’s the right colour but the wrong style, can it be altered or worn differently to make it work? If it can it goes in pile 2
Is it the right style but the wrong colour? Can wear it with a complementary colour from your palette? Do you have a scarf or some jewellery in a colour that will make it work. If yes, it goes in pile 2.
If it’s the wrong colour and wrong style, it goes in to pile 3.
If it’s not your current size and you haven’t worn it for a year it goes in to pile 3
Organise garments by categories: coats, jackets, suits, trousers, dresses, blouses and shirts. Grouping by colour within these categories will give you some ideas for combining clothes and help you find what you want quickly. Once you have organised your clothes by category, take note of how many of each item you have. At this point you will probably discover that you have quite a number of similar items. If so, don’t buy any more for the time being!
Button up jackets and coats, and pull up zips so that garments hang straight before you put them back in the wardrobe, all facing the same way. Always clean your clothes before storing as stains will oxidise and become permanent. Also, make sure you remove any brooches as they can cause rust and holes, particularly on delicate fabrics.
