PAT Testing

PAT Testing or Portable Appliance testing is an important part of any Health & Safety policy. 25% of all electrical accidents involve portable appliances. The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees and self-employed persons to comply with the provisions of the regulations and take reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of such equipment.

Pat Testing or Portable Appliance Testing is a relatively easy process if performed by a tester qualified to National Association for Professional Inspectors and Testers standards. The qualified tester will test each appliance for the correct fuse, frayed or damaged cables and tight connections. This type of testing should minimise the chances of an electrical fire. Engineers can usually test up to 25 appliances per hour, minimising downtime to ensure a cost-effective turnaround for your business.

A little know fact is that 40% of businesses that suffer from a major fire, flood or theft close down within one year of the incident. Pat testing can help avoid the chance of a major fire and is an easy and inexpensive prevention against potential electrical fires. Nationwide Electrical Safety has a same day callout service or you can book your testing slot weeks, or months in advance. Insurance companies recommend PAT testing once a year and many clients call on their preferred testing agent to tie in with the renewal of their annual insurance policy.

The process is recognised by the insurance industry as a risk assessment aid, as well as aiding the calculation of insurance premiums for public and employee liability cover.

The Health & Safety at Work Act (1974) places such an obligation in the following circumstances:

  • Where appliances are used by employees
  • Where the public may use appliances in establishments such as hospitals, schools, hotels, shops etc.
  • Where appliances are supplied or hired.
  • Where appliances are repaired or serviced

The level of inspection and testing required is dependant upon the risk of the appliance becoming faulty, which is in turn dependant upon the type of appliance, the nature of its use and the environment in which it is used.
