New Year, New You! by My Personal Style

This is generally the time when we take a good hard look at ourselves after all the indulgences of the festive season and decide we need to give ourselves a bit of an overhaul.

For many women this means starting yet another new diet and vowing (again!) to do more exercise.

Eating sensibly and exercising are certainly excellent ways to slim down and tone up but, realistically, how many of us ever achieve our perfect figure or reach – and more importantly- maintain our target weight? Why not kick-start your year by doing something that gives instant results!

At a Style Consultation, I show you how to dress your specific body shape to create the illusion of a slimmer, more shapely figure. Here are a few of the tips I share with my clients:

Dress the shape you are – not the one you wish you had! If you have a small waist, emphasise it with a belt or make sure your clothes have shaping and detail at the waist. Round or apple shapes or those with boyish figures should avoid belting clothes at the waist. For “rounds” dressing in fluid fabrics with straight lines that hang from the shoulders will have a slimming effect whilst pear shapes need to draw attention away from the hips (dark colours and plain styles are good for this) and create interest of the top half with lighter, brighter colours and pattern or detail. Those with broad shoulders, on the other hand, need to focus attention at the hips. As well as wearing pattern and texture on the lower body, a belt slung low across the hips can work well for women with small hips relative to their shoulders.

A lot of women “hide” behind black because they believe it to be slimming. Whilst it’s true that some women do look great in black, unfortunately most of us don’t. In fact, if black’s not right for you, it can really drain the colour from your face and make you look tired. The good news is that there are plenty of other colours which can have an equally slimming effect whilst at the same time giving you a radiant glow – and being a bit more interesting!.

A Colour Consultation will not only identify the shades and depths of colours which enhance your hair, eye and skin tones but also which colours work well together for you. A light/bright top under a dark jacket left unbuttoned can have a wonderfully slimming effect for example, particularly if you ensure that the jacket finishes at a flattering point on your body. Similarly, the right cut of trouser can most certainly slim your hips and lengthen your legs.

Another way of creating the impression of longer, leaner legs is to match hosiery to your skirt and /or shoes. Avoid ankle straps and opt for low-fronted shoes. High healed court shoes are particularly flattering to the legs and nude shoes teamed with bare legs or nude hosiery look great for Spring/Summer.

So, yes, start eating sensibly and do more exercise but also be kind to yourself and make the most of yourself as you are now. By choosing the cuts, colours and fabrics which are right for you, you can easily make yourself look 71bs lighter and a whole lot fresher.

Happy New Year!
