Choosing BiFold Doors To Create A Grand Design

BiFold Doors will give an architectural wow factor to your property as they will open up your house to the outside.

Bifolding doors (sometimes called multifold doors) have been growing in popularity in recent years as they create a grand opening, thus breaking down the boundary between your home’s interior and the garden. They create much larger opening than patio doors or french doors. Typically french doors and patio doors only offer a 40% opening whereas bifold doors provide 90%.

The popularity of bifold doors has grown thanks to them featuring on many television design shows. In particular they have often featured on Channel 4′s Grand Designs presented by Kevin McCloud. They have been a key design feature of the architectural expression of light and space in many of the contemporary modern designs

Cleverly used bifold doors enable the living space to spill out on to patio or decked areas. Imagine on a hot summers day feeling that your living room is part of the garden. Even during the winter months the sense of light and space that a large area of glass provided by a bifold door makes your house feel more open.

Bifold doors are usually constructed from architectural aluminium frames. Aluminium is both light and strong and minimises the space taken up by the frame. Recently uPVC bifold doors have started to be produced but these do not offer the same stunning architectural finish. They are also only suitable for shorter length openings however uPVC is a cheaper option than an aluminium bifold door.

Bifold doors are a great option for replacement of existing french doors or patio doors or when creating a new opening to the garden. An extension with bifold doors offers all the benefits of a light and airy conservatory with a more practical space that you can use year round without it getting too cold or hot.

When planning bifold doors you need to consider that they can split in the middle and fold to both sides or you can fold them to one side. If the door is used for frequent access to the outside then the addition of a traffic door, an opening that can be used with out the whole door being folded back is a good idea.

When buying bifold doors it is important to consider security. Buyers should look out for secured by design labels. Securiyt features should include:

  • Traffic doors provided with high security multipoint locking.
  • Traffic doors with high security ABS locking cylinders.
  • Intermediate panel doors with internal lockable handles.
  • Intermediate panel doors with shootbolt locking
  • Dedicated bottom bogey guide.
  • High security double glazed units, internally beaded for added security.
